Talking Out Your Fears
Going through life we all make errors in judgement – it’s inevitable, nobody is perfect.
I am led by my emotions and unfortunately make a lot of knee-jerk reaction choices when in certain situations.
However, I had a conversation today in relation to how people handle various situations in life and going forward I am going to alter my usual reactions and follow this advice. After walking away and thinking about it I realised that this could be applied to any part of our lives.
Some of you may have heard the phrase “Talking out your fears” and know what it means but I never have before today.
The General Principle
If you’re faced with a situation and you are ready to react with a knee-jerk reaction then the likelihood is that this reaction is not going to be in your best interests as it’s a more emotive choice rather than a logical one.
Obviously that’s not always easy to do for some of us, but before you drop that absolute clanger, you will always have time to ask yourself the question..
What is most likely to happen next?
Or
Then What?
Whatever choice you have mentally made in terms of your reaction, STOP! Before you react in that way ask yourself this:
- If I react like that, what is most likely to happen next?
- Then, ask yourself again, if that happens, then what?
Keep doing it until you realise that the final outcome is not at all the best one for you.
It changes the whole outlook of the situation and allows you to realise that the likely end scenario is not ideally where you want to end up. It’s just your emotions leading your decisions and tricking your brain.
In fact, it would be good practice to try this going forward for any decision which needs to be made – you will always come to a better decision than if you are led by the emotions you’re feeling at that precise moment.
What has this got to do with Mums working from home?
As I said, this can be applied to any part of your life, personal or work life.
If you’re currently looking for working from home opportunities the chances are that you’ve tried a few already which haven’t worked out.
If you’ve tried a few it means you have given up on them for whatever reason – usually because you either see no future in it or it was a scam which you were tricked into.

Now if you joined a real, legitimate working from home opportunity that wasn’t a “get-rich-quick” scheme but it was a longer burn – one that you had to work at but knew that you would get that brighter future that you seek – at some point you may start to flag.
- You may lose enthusiasm because it’s not happening as fast as you’d like it to.
- You could start questioning whether you are cut out for it because other people are doing the same thing but they have started making money faster than you have.
- It may be, that you lose confidence in yourself and don’t believe you can actually get to the end result
It’s a normal thought process for any of us. BUT the next thought is inevitably “what should I do about it?”
Are you going to quit again? When will all of the walking away stop? The “get-rich-quick scheme” doesn’t exist and you know that deep down. It’s a pipe dream pushed by the scam artists who just want your money.
Let’s try Talking Out Your Fears at That Moment….

I will use Wealthy Affiliate as an example here as it’s the most real and legitimate working from home opportunity that I’ve come across and it’s FREE so definitely not a scam.
This is how it plays out:
Firstly we sign up with our FREE membership and have a good look around the platform and what’s on offer. Everything looks great. So far so good.
We get to know some people in the Community almost straight away because from day one they are stepping up to offer help and support. We look around the step-by-step training modules, read the motivational blogs from within the Forum etc. etc. the list goes on, there is so much to take in.
We love it from the start. So once we have satisfied our curiosity and recognised the scale of the opportunity on offer we sign up to Premium. By then we know the full value of what we can achieve here, the unquestionable support which is given and the tools that are on offer to ensure we succeed.
A few modules into the training, after setting up our own live website and choosing our niche we start to realise that there is a lot of work required to get to where we want to be.
Lots of research to do, writing website content, working through the training modules etc. – we know the success is achievable and we are loving what we are learning and adding to our website every day but how long will it take to earn the money?
What drives us after we reach that point?
It’s not what drove us initially.
At the beginning it was thinking about the money which can be earned, the financial freedom – being able to work from home and at the same time being there for our children. Obviously you still know the future end result hasn’t changed but your perception of how to get there might have.
I’m sure most of you, like me, would get so much more out of Wealthy Affiliate than you expected after you decided to commit your time and effort for the future that you want.
All of us existing members say on almost a daily basis, there is no other forum or Community on the Internet that even comes close to the support and help we give each other – especially one with over 2m members!
However, despite all that’s on offer, inevitably there are people that quit – there always will be in anything that requires some work.
People who signed up thinking it’s quick, easy money (I don’t know why there is this misconception that if it’s money earned on the internet it’s quick and easy?)
Very few businesses, if any, earn money quickly and easily. In a bricks & mortar business you have to do a business plan, invest your time in setting it up and continually work on it to make it a success – why should an internet business be any different? I don’t get it….
So, what leads these people to quit?
Obviously sometimes it’s life circumstances which can’t be helped – but I’m talking about the ones which just decide one day that it’s not worth their time.
If they have been part of Wealthy Affiliate for five or six months, how much content must they have written, how many hours have they put into their new business? Into the training?
Those are hours which you aren’t going to get back. Hours of your life which have been totally wasted – for what? A big, fat nothing!
So my theory is – for anybody who reaches the point (in any business venture) where they think to themselves, “what’s the point, it’s taking too long” firstly STOP! Talk Out Your Fears.
Here’s how it could look:
“This is taking too long, I thought it would happen faster – I’m not happy”
What is most likely to happen next?
“I’ll quit”
What is most likely to happen next?
“I will have wasted all that time and effort and have achieved nothing, again!”
What is most likely to happen next?
“I will have to look for something else and start from scratch again because I’m still not where I want to be financially”
What is most likely to happen next?
“It’s unlikely I will find something which earns me money quickly and easily so I will have to put some work into the next venture”
What is most likely to happen next?
“I will get fed up and quit again”
Obviously this can go on and on for as long as you like but you see where I’m going with it.
This thought process can change your whole outlook and make you realise that there are better options. Like in the Wealthy Affiliate example – the better options would be sticking with it and following in the footsteps of those who have completed the training and currently run successful online businesses.
I have decided to use this method on different situations in my life as they arise – as I admitted in the beginning, I am a bit of a knee-jerker to be fair. And it’s led to some pretty bad situation choices.
So, that’s it – my theory for the day – which I plan to put into practice from this day forward.

Hi Alex-
Taking a step back really helps AND taking a deep breath as you do it.
There is so much going on today around us that affects everything we do and say.
Non verbal communication is equally hard to control, like a sigh or rolling our eyes in our head when someone says something we don’t like.
We all have to take time in our responses. One thing I try to do, it to put myself in their shoes. That helps!
Thanks for your post. Wishing you lots of success!
Hi, thank you so much for your comment.
You’re so right about the non-verbal communication, I didn’t think of that aspect. Thanks for highlighting it. We definitely need to take a step back and think about our responses rather than a knee jerk reaction.
Hi Alexandra,
Thanks for this article, I can relate to it since I don’t have a good reputation for my temper. But I am getting there. 🙂 I learn not to make up my mind doing something when I am turning emotional, and it works very well for my decision making.
I also agree with you that if we say out loud the fear, and the fear itself seems to get less and less each time.
For example, I need to talk at least four times to either my friends/family/partners about things I fear. I could sense my worries get disappearing each time, so this technique works on me. I think it will work on others too.
Anyway, if you talk about your fear towards WA, the fear might be gone in a short time, and you can keep going to achieve your own goal. I do think those successful WA members were facing the same questions as we do, but they still make it at last.
Cheers,
Matt
Hi Matt,
Thanks for taking the time to comment on my post and I’m so glad that you can relate to it. It’s not something I had heard of until recently and I think it will be a Godsend to me and anybody who uses this technique, whether it be in business or personal life.
I think you’re absolutely right about all WA members facing the same questions of themselves at some point or another as it’s a complete learning process which takes a lot of work but leads to great success.
Thanks again, Alex
