Product Claim: Simply order sim cards, hand them out and earn money.
O2 Star Trader Overview
This is a scheme which is offered by O2 to increase the number of people using O2 Pay As You Go Sim cards.
The concept is very simple :
- Register to become a Star Trader
- Order the number of O2 free Sim Cards you would like (there is a maximum per Trader Level)
- O2 send them to you 14 days later
- You then give them out to people encouraging them to activate them
- £5 is paid by O2 against each card which is activated
It sounds very simple, and to be honest, the idea is very simple in theory.
The Good:
- Sim cards are free of charge
- Get £5 for every activation
- Trade whenever and wherever you like
- Work at your own pace, no pressure
- Sim cards sent straight to your home free of charge
- The more successful you are, the more you earn.
- Uncapped earnings
- No start-up costs
- Round-the-clock support
- O2 Star Trader App to manage ordering, payment etc.
The Not So Good:
- UK residents only
- Activations must be for £10 or more initial top up
- Will be down-graded a Trader Level if activation levels fall
- 14 day delivery time
- Payment is held until two months after activation of sim
- Low success ratio
How it works..
You need to register online via the website and once registration is complete you have an open account ready to use.
There are 3 Trader Levels and you start off at the Bronze Trader Type which allows you to order a maximum of 20 Sim cards per month, equal to a maximum of £100 earnings for the month if every Sim card were to be activated.
You choose which Sims you would like – choose from a range of Sims – Classic, International Sims or Big Bundles.
Next you place your order for your free Sim cards and wait for the delivery to arrive in 14 days. The Sim cards are delivered direct to your home in O2 Welcome Packs which are given out to your customers.
The good thing is that you are allowed to distribute the Sim cards pretty much any way that you want to – trade whenever and wherever you like. This means via eBay, social media, online marketplaces, entertainment events, on your very own website or FB page – it’s up to you – the main point is to get the Sim cards out to as many people as possible.
Please note however, you must distribute the Sims directly to your customers not via marketing companies, Sim distributors, agencies or any other kind of trading partner.
If you choose to use a website to promote the Sim cards you can sign up for an Affiliate Activation – O2 then supplies you with a personalised banner to put on your website which customers can click on and order their own Sim cards.
The banner will have a unique URL registered to you and this is tracked to ensure you are paid for all activations of Sims ordered from your banner.
O2 offers you around the clock support if you need it, and they offer accessories and tools for your business to grow your own Empire.
Once you have signed up you get access to the Trader Dashboard. The Dashboard gives you access to tips and support and insights into how to get the biggest returns. It also keeps track of your activations so that you know your up to date numbers at all times.
You don’t receive payment for your activations until two months have passed as the activations are checked for spam and fraudulent data first.
Payment is made via direct electronic transfer into your designated bank account.
Trader Types
The more Sim cards you get out there, the more activations you earn – this means more commission for you.
As you build up the numbers you can work your way up through the Trader levels – the higher rank you are, the more Sim cards you are allowed to order each month which means higher commission opportunities.
This is a good incentive for people to work towards the highest level.
The Platinum, allows you to order up to 550 Sims per month which could equate to £2,750. Although, to be honest, it seems that it would be in the realms of Never Never Land for that to happen as all 550 people would need to activate their Sim in that month.
Although, “Never Say Never” is the saying… it has been reported that one University student earned £160k in one year but success stories are extremely hard to find.
Who is O2 Star Trader aimed at?
For people who either have a vast media presence or access to large numbers of people ie. University students.
This can only work successfully if you find ways to get the Sim cards out there in high numbers because the activation ratio is fairly low.
My Verdict:
This is simply a numbers game – the more Sim cards that are given out, the more activations you get and the more money you earn.
Reading some reviews there are a select minority reported to have made some good money out of it but they have worked at it 4-5 hours per day every day of the working week. And this is literally a combination of leg work and online presence – so if you can throw yourself into this it could work.
This is definitely NOT a scam and there is some money to be made. I think it’s a case of they make it sound easier than it is. Just be aware that it is not a “get rich quick” scheme or as easy as it sounds.
It could be a way to make a small amount of extra money but you will have to put in the leg work for it unless you can think of several ways to reach a wide target audience.

Overall WOW Factor:

This was a really great review. I have never heard of O2 Star Trader and at first glance it looks like a great oppotunity. Thats untill you realise how much hard work is needed to make money from it. If I was in my 20’s still I would have jumped at this. I think your review is absolutely right, you need access to a lot of people in some capacity to make a success of this.
I’ve already bookmarked this site, I’m definately checking out more reviews here.
Thank you Justin for reading my review and for your comment. Yes, they do make it sound simple to earn good money but it’s purely a numbers game – and you have no control over who or how many activate the cards. All you can do is hand them out. But you’re right, I think this is ideal for a young person ie. student.
Thanks again and I hope you enjoy my future reviews.
Hi Connected Mama, thank you for this review. This is certainly a new concept to me but unfortunately not being in the UK, its not available to me. To me, this sounds like something that there is no lost signing up for and to try. One thing that I am not sure I got from your article, is that for customers to activate, will they need to pay? Or are they given like some free credits the moment they activate? It is certainly going to be much harder if customers are going to be charged the moment they activate. But as I said earlier, this is certainly interesting and I am going to check out the mobile providers in my country to see if they have similar offers. The Affiliate option is great as well… Please do share more of such opportunities in the future!
Hi Steve, thanks for reading and for your comment. Yes the customer has to put a minimum credit of £10 on to activate the card and then obviously they have to keep topping the card up as they use their phone. You’re right, I get the feeling there’s nothing to lose, especially if you have access to large numbers of people. There are a couple that seem to do it here so quite possibly there will be companies there too. It would be great if you’d pop back and let us know here on connectedmamma.com!
Thank you for such an interesting post, I am always looking for ways to make extra income and I have never heard of this before. I live in the UK and know the O2 network but didn’t have a clue that a scheme like this existed. Thank you for the detailed breakdown of the scheme – On paper it looks great but your post points out some areas that I would not have considered, I will pass this onto my nephew who is at University and who has a large group of friends, this may suit him as even if he makes only a few extra ££ it will mean a lot to him!
Regards – Mike
Absolutely Mike, for somebody like your nephew this could be great for some extra money. Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment. It would be great to know if your nephew makes a go of it.
I’m a little confused. If you don’t mind me asking and I would really love to know this, what do the company get a for doing this? For what I understood, as an affiliate, or anyone, you can just order the SIM cards and give away for free without an extra cost for you or the customer? What is in the SIM card and would my information be stolen, or will I get hacked if I activate it?
Hi Stephanie, thank you for reading and for your question, of course I don’t mind you asking! When a customer activates the card they have to top it up, put credit on it so they can use their phone. It’s a Pay as you Go SIM card. The company always makes money when they provide you with the ability to make calls.
Hi! Thank you for this review. One of the things that caught my attention from O2 Star Trader was how easy it sounded to make money. Reading your review I have learnt it’s not a scam, but it’s definitely not as easy as it was initially promoted. I think I’ll give them a pass. Your review has helped me decide. Thanks.
Thank you so much for reading my review. I will always be honest on my reviews because I want to help anybody who is looking to work from home legitimately and not waste their time or money.
